Toshiba Dehumidifier Reviews - 2024 Updates & User Feedback (2024)

In today’s Toshiba Dehumidifier Review I’ll cover the current dehumidifier lineup by Toshiba.

High humidity can make hot summer days extremely uncomfortable. Plus, it can lead to mold and mildew growth if left unattended. A dehumidifier is a great solution to manage excess humidity. If you need a dehumidifier for your home, Japan-based electronics brand Toshiba offers a solid range of dehumidifier sizes for different needs.

Toshiba dehumidifiers have most of the typical features you can find in any modern dehumidifier. They provide continuous operation through a drain hose or built-in pump, as well as custom humidity control for a preset time.

However, according to some recent user reviews Toshiba doesn’t always perform especially well when compared with other similar size dehumidifiers.

Toshiba 50-pint Dehumidifier

Toshiba Dehumidifier Reviews - 2024 Updates & User Feedback (2)

This 50-pint dehumidifier is the newer version of this 70-pint old model. As of 2020, previously 70-pint dehumidifiers are now 50-pint per the new DOE standards. This dehumidifier can cover up to 4,500 square feet and hold 13 pints of water in its internal bucket. Toshiba has an Energy Star rating to help you save money in the long run.

Like most modern home dehumidifiers, the Toshiba allows for automatic humidity control with the built-in humidistat and digital controls. Set your ideal humidity from 35% to 85% RH and the dehumidifier cycles on and off to maintain this level.

To drain the water automatically, attach a drain hose (not included) directly to the outlet on the back of the unit. There is no need for a gravity drainage adapter unlike some other models.

Toshiba dehumidifiers have the air intake on the back and the exhaust on the side of the unit. Side exhaust dehumidifiers, in general, make a less pleasant noise than those with top exhausts. This is because the fan noise masks the compressor noise better with the top exhaust. Toshiba comes with the industry standard one-year warranty.

Check out this video review of this Toshiba dehumidifier.

Pros

  • High moisture removal rate
  • Energy Star certified
  • Auto shutoff with bucket full light
  • Programmable 24-hour timer
  • Auto defrost with indicator light
  • Continuous drainage option

Cons

  • Can be noisy
  • Below average lifespan

Toshiba 35-pint Dehumidifier

Toshiba Dehumidifier Reviews - 2024 Updates & User Feedback (3)

The Toshiba 35-pint dehumidifier comes with a similar appearance and functionality as the 50-pint unit, except for the smaller moisture removal capacity. It can cover 3,000 square feet and also has an Energy Star rating.

Similarly, this Toshiba dehumidifier is equipped with a digital humidistat and most standard features. When the 13-pint bucket is full, the compressor will shut off and the Bucket Full indicator will light up.

Toshiba operates in temperatures between 41°F and 95°F. When frost is detected on the coils, the compressor will stop while the fan continues to melt away the ice. The Defrost light will indicate when the unit is in Auto Defrost mode.

This unit also offers a continuous drainage option. Remove the outlet cover and connect a standard garden hose. Make sure the dehumidifier is placed higher than the drain and the hose is directed downwards. This unit is light and portable with four wheels and a handle on each side.

Pros

  • Energy Star certified
  • Auto shutoff with bucket full light
  • Programmable 24-hour timer
  • Auto defrost with indicator light
  • Continuous drainage option

Cons

  • Can be noisy
  • Below average lifespan

Toshiba 50-pint Dehumidifier with Built-in Pump

Toshiba Dehumidifier Reviews - 2024 Updates & User Feedback (4)

Toshiba also offers a 50-pint dehumidifier with a built-in condensate pump. This unit has a similar capacity and coverage as the 50-pint model. It is also Energy Star rated to help save energy and costs.

This Toshiba dehumidifier also comes with an automatic humidistat and easy-to-use control panel. The timer can be programmed for up to 24 hours. This unit also offers Continuous and Comfort modes for pre-set humidity settings, and Turbo fan speed for maximum moisture removal.

In addition, this unit allows for automatic drainage to a farther distance away or above the unit with the internal condensate pump and the included drain hose. To activate the automatic drain pump, press the Pump button on the control panel. Like other built-in pumps, the one in Toshiba tends to have a short life.

Pros

  • High moisture removal rate
  • Energy Star certified
  • Auto shutoff with bucket full light
  • Programmable 24-hour timer
  • Auto defrost with indicator light
  • Continuous drainage option

Cons

  • Can be noisy
  • Below average lifespan

Toshiba Dehumidifier Digital Controls

Digital Humidistat

The digital display shows the current humidity and the preferred humidity setting. Press the arrow buttons to select the desired humidity level from 35% to 85% in 5% increments. The dehumidifier automatically turns off at the chosen humidity level and starts dehumidifying again when the room humidity rises above your setting.

Timer

You can set the Toshiba dehumidifier to turn on or turn off automatically. To program the unit to automatically turn on, press the Timer button when the unit is off. Using the arrow buttons, set the timer in 30 minute increments up to 10 hours, and one hour increments up to 24 hours. The Timer On indicator will light up.

To program the unit to automatically turn off, press the button when the unit is on. The Timer Off indicator will light up when you finish setting the timer.

Turbo

The Turbo button controls the fan speed. Press to select either Normal or Turbo mode. For maximum moisture removal, set the fan to Turbo speed. For quiet operation, turn off Turbo mode.

Continuous

The Continuous button enables continuous dehumidification (theoretically, down to 0% RH). When turning on, the dehumidifier is on Continuous mode by default. Press the button to disable Continuous operation and manually input the humidity level. Set the dehumidifier to Continuous for the first 24 hours.

Comfort

If you choose Comfort mode, the humidity cannot be changed manually. The humidity will be set automatically to the recommended levels based on the ambient temperature.

Filter

Toshiba dehumidifiers have a washable and reusable filter to catch dust and other airborne particles and maintain proper functioning. The Clean Filter indicator will light up after 250 hours of operation as a reminder to clean the filter.

Remove the filter behind the grille on the back of the unit. Clean the filter with warm, soapy water, and let it dry completely before reinstalling. Press the Filter button to reset the filter indicator and the light will turn off.

Alternatives to Toshiba Dehumidifiers

Frigidaire dehumidifiers are among the top-performing units today for their excellent quality and powerful performance. This 50-pint dehumidifier is often rated the best for its size. It’s also available in 22-pint, 35-pint, and 50-pint with a built-in pump. Unlike other residential dehumidifiers, Frigidaire operates continuously down to 41°F without an Auto Defrost mode.

This high-capacity hOmeLabs dehumidifier is also a great alternative if you want good performance at a budget price. It’s also available in 22-pint, 35-pint, and 50-pint, which can cover up to 1,500 square feet, 3,000 square feet, and 4,500 square feet, respectively. hOmeLabs also comes with a longer two-year warranty.

Honeywell is another top dehumidifier for effective humidity control in homes. Like the other two, it is Energy Star rated. It also features a front mirage display to easily monitor humidity levels and Sleep mode for quiet operation. Honeywell is sold in 20-pint, 30-pint, and 50-pint. All units come with a very long warranty of five years.

Customer Feedback on Toshiba Dehumidifiers

Toshiba is a well-trusted brand of standard-priced appliances. In terms of build quality, the Toshiba unit is about average when compared with other dehumidifiers of similar sizes. Like the hOmeLabs dehumidifier, Toshiba fails in comparison to the top-rated Frigidaire. Both have a flimsier water tank and a side exhaust that doesn’t seem to mask the compressor noise as well.

Of course, it varies between each user, but based on recent reviews, some users have seen Toshiba dehumidifiers start to malfunction after less than a year of full year of usage. What’s even worse is when they quit working just around the time the one-year warranty expires.

Another common complaint is the incomplete or unclear instructions in the owner’s manual. Users who have little to no prior knowledge on dehumidifiers may find the Toshiba difficult to operate.

Overall, the Toshiba dehumidifier is good enough for average room conditions and light to moderate use. It does almost anything you might expect in a modern home dehumidifier, but it doesn’t excel in any particular aspect.
